My baby is one year old today! Her daddy managed to salvage the cake, sort of. Pip didn’t mind.

At least it was nice and colorful. It tasted pretty good too!

Advice from the birthday girl: If you can’t eat fast enough with both hands, use your feet too.

She put a pretty good dent in the cake.

She enjoyed opening presents almost as much as eating the cake.

Pip will be 1 year old tomorrow. Grandma is in town from Cincinnati to help celebrate. I’m doing her 1 year pictures in 2 parts, so today I did her more “typical” 1 year pictures. Tomorrow I’ll be shooting her eating her own cake in a studio-type setup, make sure to check back tomorrow for those images. They should be awesome, especially after you see the cake below – make sure to read all the way to the bottom of this post, you’re going to be blown away by our mad cake-making skills. But before we get to the cake, here are some my favorite images from our day at Main Street today.

In the images below, Pip is dressed in her mommy’s outfits. Grandma really wanted some pictures of her in the same clothes her mama wore, so here they are.

Okay, now for the cake. On facebook I posed the question “If you were turning 1, what kind of cake would you like?” I got quite a few responses, but decided on an idea that came from the mother of one of my fall 2009 grooms. This is the link she shared with me – http://www.theidearoom.net /2009/07/rainbow-cake.html. I recruited grandma to help make the cake, and we spent a good amount of time working on it today. Below are images from the process, make sure to scroll all the way to the end to see how close we got our cake to the one on the blog.

So far so good. Buttercream frosting, yum.

Almost there…

Uh-oh, Grandma’s laughing at something.

Time for a surgical intervention.

After we stopped laughing, we decided to go with my brother’s idea of using plastic wrap to hold the thing together like he uses on pallets of inventory when the stuff won’t stay put.

What now? I’m not sure exactly, but we’re going to roll with it. Pip’s daddy put the plastic-wrapped masterpiece in the freezer, and he’s going to unwrap it and see what he can do to make it look, er, pretty, in the morning. At least Pip isn’t picky about her food, she’ll eat anything. It was made with love, dangit.

So what do you think, should I stick with shooting food instead of making it?

Aarti Sequeira, the sister of one of my fall 2009 brides (the super sweet Kavita), recently won the season 6 contest. I just thought I’d post a quick congrats to Aarti and her family. What an exciting accomplishment!

I met Alex a little over a year ago when he was just getting into modeling and acting. I’ve shot with him a few times, a few images from one of our earlier shoots can be seen here. I’ve been wanting to mess around with some light set-ups, so I was happy that Alex was willing to work with me once again. Since our last shoot, he’s been involved in some pretty exciting things including an advertising campaign for Armani Exchange and an appearance in Cosmopolitan magazine. Would you believe he’s just 19 years old?

She’s the head chef of a steakhouse in one of the casinos in Vegas, and Tony is a tech-guy by day and real estate agent by night. My favorite thing about my dear friend Diana? She’s awesome. My favorite thing about Tony? He’s perfect for her. We did their engagement session at Lake Las Vegas and Red Rock this past weekend.

I take it as a huge compliment anytime a creative professional asks me to do headshots or other images for them. During the shoot we talked a little bit about some of her work, it sounds like she’s been involved in some pretty impressive projects. Ashley & Eric will be married at Sassi next March. They are fabulous, Ashley has the most stunning eyes. Eric insisted on a handful of over-the-top goofy shots, so their engagement session was a mixture of traditional engagement images, goofy shots, and fashion-style portraits. I’m looking forward to their spring wedding. This session was styled by their awesome wedding planner, Valerie Bolitho, from Blueprint Affairs.
